Based in our Ottawa office, Robert Ruddock is a commercial litigator whose practice focuses on complex business disputes, insurance litigation, and construction-related matters. Called to the bar in 2020, he advises clients across a broad range of litigation matters, combining strong advocacy with a practical understanding of business realities. Having operated his own firm early in his career, Robert approaches disputes with an appreciation for the financial, operational, and strategic considerations that matter most to clients.
His representative experience includes acting as co-counsel in obtaining a vesting order over a $2 million real estate development property based on a resulting trust claim after successfully defeating limitation period and laches defences. He also helped reduce a $450,000 cross-application to $46,304 following the exclusion of the respondent’s expert evidence.
Robert has acted as co-counsel in significant commercial litigation, including successfully defeating a motion to strike negligent misrepresentation and oppression claims valued at approximately $7.5 million, with the court awarding $40,000 in costs to the plaintiff. He also helped secure a contested Norwich order against Reddit to identify an anonymous poster, with the court recognizing that an employer's workplace harassment investigation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act could justify Norwich relief.
Robert is known for providing candid, plain-language advice about risks, costs, and realistic outcomes. Guided by the principles of rigour, proportionality, and respect for client decision-making, he works closely with clients to develop litigation strategies that align with their business objectives and achieve practical results.
Robert earned his Juris Doctor from Queen’s University in 2019 and holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Western University. He is a member of the County of Carleton Law Association and serves clients in both English and French.
